Pioneers participate in Eagle Invitational

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University men's tennis team competed at the Eagle Invitational, hosted by Carson-Newman University at Tyson Park.

The Pioneers competed against players from Carson-Newman, Lee, Charleston and Young Harris in five flights of singles and three flights of doubles during the two-day event.

Freshman Robin Eldin won the flight C singles championship for the Pioneers, with senior Vadzim Raitsou as a finalist in the flight. At flight B, senior Kenta Kondou finished as runner-up.

Eldin defeated Eric DelValle of Young Harris 6-1, 6-3 in his first match on Friday, then beat Ids Waterbolk of Carson-Newman 6-3, 6-2. Raitsou was a 4-6, 6-4, (10-1) winner over Andrew Johnston of Lee in his quarterfinal, then beat Janis Auslands of Young Harris 6-1, 7-5 in the semifinals.

Kondou won by default in his first match, then beat Diego Garcia Lee 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals. However, he was unable to compete against Gjorgjj Jankulovski of Carson-Newman in the flight B finals.

Senior Frank Bonacia won two of his three matches in flight A, defeating Marnix Van Dalen of Carson-Newman in the quarterfinals and Marc Janse of Carson-Newman 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), (10-8) in the third-place match.

In flight D of singles, freshman Nathan Matsuguma advanced over Alexandre Schiltz of Young Harris after his opponent retired following a 6-1 win by Matsuguma in the first set.

In doubles play, Bonacia and Eldin beat Pieke Bouman and Auslands of Young Harris 6-4 in a consolation match in flight A, Raitsou and Subanovic downed Jake Magill and John Giesberts of Charleston 6-4 in the flight B quarterfinals, and Matsuguma teamed with sophomore Lluis Tomas for a 7-5 win over the Charleston team of Felipe Girondi and Adrian Heidelberger in flight C round-robin competition.

The Pioneers will close their fall schedule on Friday at noon with a match at North Greenville.
