Pioneers hold on for 5-2 win at Francis Marion

FLORENCE, S.C. --- Tusculum University held on for a 5-2 victory over Francis Marion University in non-conference men's tennis action at Kassab Courts Thursday afternoon.

The Pioneers (7-4) took a 3-0 lead after winning the doubles point and the first two singles matches, but the Patriots (5-5) came back with two wins to cut the lead to 3-2. The Pioneers then won the last two singles matches to claim the win.

In doubles, the Pioneers swept all three matches from the Patriots. Gabriel Yaguar and Manuel Guedes de Almeida defeated Will-Anthony Forsberg and Charles Hutchings 6-3 at flight two, and Jacco Mensinga and Leon Huck clinched the doubles point with a 7-6 (7-3) win over Liam Day and Matt Astell. Also earning a win for the Pioneers were David Akinpetide and Frank Bonacia, who won 7-5 over Mauricio Guerrero and Alex Regner at flight one.

Tusculum went up 3-0 as Bonacia beat Regner 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) at flight two singles, followed by Akinpetide who outlasted Guerrero 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 at flight one. Wins for the Patriots at flights four and six trimmed the Pioneer advantage to 3-2, but Vadzim Raitsou won his match at flight five after Brandon Sweeney retired following the first set, which Raitsou won 6-3. Huck wrapped up the match with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Day at flight three.
