Pioneers place three on SAC All-Conference team

ROCK HILL, S.C. --- Three members of the Tusculum men's tennis team were honored with selection to the All-South Atlantic Conference team, the league office announced Wednesday.

Junior Tomas Kmetko and freshman Yago Fernandez were each named second-team All-Conference in singles, while Fernandez and senior David Siegle were selected honorable mention All-SAC in doubles. Together, they helped the Pioneers to a 6-5 conference record and a 12-10 overall mark during the season.

Kmetko, a native of Bratislava, Slovakia, compiled a 9-5 record at number-one singles for the Pioneers. Kmetko was 5-3 in conference matches, earning two of his five wins in three sets. Three of his five losses were to regionally-ranked teams, while earning a tiebreaker win in a match against nationally-ranked Palm Beach Atlantic.

Fernandez played most of the season at number-two singles for the Pioneers and finished with a record of 11-8. The native of Aviles, Spain was 7-4 in conference matches, and had a 4-2 record in contests that went to either a third set or a tiebreaker. Overall, Fernandez won five of the nine matches in which he split the first two sets.

The doubles team of Fernandez and Siegle was a perfect 6-0 in conference matches, and finished 7-4 while playing primarily at number-three doubles. The pairing has won six of its last seven matches together, with the only loss coming to nationally-ranked Palm Beach Atlantic. Siegle, a native of Ditzingen, Germany, has a 41-28 career doubles record for the Pioneers including 13-8 this season.

Queens swept the conference awards, as Jules Athalis was named Player of the Year, Paolo Bompieri was Freshman of the Year and Billy Boykin was honored as Coach of the Year.
