The Tusculum College men's tennis team is ranked 50th in the
latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II rankings,
which were released this week.
The Pioneers (19-4), who are ranked ninth in the Southeast Region
by the ITA, also have one player ranked in the region as sophomore
Tim Stierle is 20th in singles.
Tusculum finished the season with a 2-2 record against ranked
opponents, with wins over #47 Northwood on March 8 and #48 Wingate
on March 18 accounting for the victories. Wingate is 36th in this
week's national poll while Northwood is 49th. Other Pioneer
opponents in this week's rankings include Bluefield State at #44
and Georgia Gwinnett at #1 in the NAIA national poll.
Stierle, who was named South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year
and was first-team All-SAC in both singles and doubles, finished
the season with a 17-2 record in singles which includes an 11-0
mark in conference matches. Stierle went 15-2 at number-one singles
for the Pioneers, with his only losses coming to ranked opponents,
including the top-ranked player in the NAIA.
Tusculum won its third South Atlantic Conference championship in
the past four years, finishing with a 10-1 mark in league play.
Tusculum also set a program record with 15 consecutive victories,
all to open the season.
