The Tusculum College men's tennis team maintained its unbeaten
record by defeating Mars Hill University 8-1 in South Atlantic
Conference action Tuesday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis
Complex.
The Pioneers (13-0, 4-0 SAC) swept doubles and won the first five
singles matches against the Lions (4-11, 1-7 SAC) to stay perfect
in conference action.
In doubles play, Tim Stierle and Jonas Winkelmann defeated Alberto
Ortiz and Sam Lee by a score of 8-2 at flight one, Tashique Kader
and Leon Seiz beat Markus Gattner and Ben Reid 8-6 at flight two,
and Toby de Klerk teamed with Eduardo Munoz for an 8-3 win over
Alejandre Ozaki and Blake Covington at flight three.
Stierle gave the Pioneers a 4-0 lead after he defeated Ortiz 6-1,
6-2 at flight one, and David Siegle accounted for the clinching
point in the match with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Covington at flight
six. Munoz was also a straight-sets winner as he downed Gattner
6-2, 7-5 at flight two.
In pro set action, Winkelmann defeated Reid 8-2 at flight three,
and Kader won 8-2 over Carlos Riesco at flight four to help the
Pioneers to an 8-0 lead. Mars Hill salvaged a point with a victory
by Lee at flight five.
Tusculum is scheduled to return to action Saturday at Anderson,
beginning at 1 p.m.
