Tusculum College senior Jonas Winkelmann has been honored as the
AstroTurf South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week in men's
tennis for the week ending March 20, the conference office
announced Monday. It is the second time this season that Winkelmann
has received the award and fourth time in his career.
Winkelmann rallied from a set down and held off a pair of match
points in a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 win against Wingate University at
number-three singles on Friday afternoon, allowing the Pioneers to
complete a 5-4 victory over the Bulldogs in a showdown between
nationally-ranked teams. The win snapped a five-match losing streak
to Wingate and allowed Tusculum to extend the best start in program
history to 12 victories without a loss.
Earlier in the week, the Boblingen, Germany native teamed with Tim
Stierle for an 8-2 win in number-one doubles against Catawba as the
Pioneers defeated the Indians 7-2. The victory was the 33rd
consecutive doubles win for Winkelmann dating to the 2013-14
season.
Winkelmann is 7-4 in singles and 10-1 in doubles this season for
the Pioneers, who will carry a 12-0 overall record and 3-0 SAC
record into Saturday's match at Coker. Start time is scheduled for
2 p.m.
