Tusculum College made it eight straight victories with a 7-2 win
at Newberry College in a South Atlantic Conference men's tennis
match on Sunday afternoon at Newberry High School.
The Pioneers (11-3, 4-1 SAC) put away the match by winning the
final three singles contests after the Wolves (8-7, 5-3 SAC) had
pulled within 4-2 in singles play. The decisive point came from
flight four of singles, where David Siegle beat Carols Nicolopulos
by a 6-4, 6-3 score.
Tusculum bolted to a 3-0 lead in doubles play as the
regionally-ranked team of Lukas and Jonas Winkelmann beat Vinicius
Botelho and Michael Saunders 8-5, Siegle and Joseph Elphingstone
downed Fernando Espana and Nicolopulos 8-6 and Leon Seiz teamed
with Nicolas Planchard for an 8-4 win over Jeffery Kiser and
Mohammed Chakir.
Lukas Winkelmann improved to 14-0 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Saunders
at flight one, but wins from Botelho and Espana cut the margin to
4-2. Espana's victory came after he rallied from a set down and won
two tiebreakers. However, Siegle's win combined with victories by
Seiz (6-4, 6-2 over Chakir) and Elphingstone (2-6, 6-1, 10-6 over
David Sons) sent the Pioneers home with another victory.
The Pioneers will return to action Tuesday afternoon at
Carson-Newman, beginning at 1 p.m.
