
Tusculum College claimed its third straight shutout with a 9-0
victory over Mars Hill University in a South Atlantic Conference
men's tennis match Tuesday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis
Complex.
The Pioneers (9-3, 2-1 SAC) extended their winning streak to six
matches by sweeping doubles and winning 11 of 12 sets in singles
against the Lions (4-7, 2-3 SAC).
In doubles, the team of Jonas Winkelmann and Lukas Winkelmann
defeated Euquerio Guerrero and Sam Lee 8-1 at flight one, John
Taylor and David Siegle beat Alberto Ortiz and Joel Sturgis at
flight two by a score of 8-4, and Nicolas Planchard teamed with
Leon Seiz for an 8-1 win over Marcus Gattner and Daniel Nelson at
flight three.
The Pioneers put the match away in the first half of singles, as
Lukas Winkelmann and Planchard each improved their records to 12-0
with straight-set wins. Lukas Winkelmann downed Guerrero 6-1, 6-2
at flight one, and Planchard earned the clinching point with a 6-1,
6-2 victory over Ortiz at flight two. Jonas Winkelmann boosted his
season record to 11-1 by defeating Sturgis 6-1, 6-1 at flight
three.
At flight four, Siegle needed a tiebreaker to defeat Lee 6-1, 6-7,
(10-2), while Taylor bounced Gattner 7-5, 6-1 at flight five and
Seiz swept Nelson 6-0, 6-1 at flight six.
The Pioneers will be back home on Saturday at 11 a.m. against
Catawba at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
