
The Tusculum College men's tennis team opened its annual spring
break trip to Hilton Head with a 6-3 win over the University of
Charleston Monday afternoon. The Pioneers (6-3) won four of the six
singles matches to claim the win over the Golden Eagles (2-4) and
earn their third straight victory overall.
In doubles play, the team of Lukas Winkelmann and Jonas Winkelmann
beat James Gammell and Dennis Okoth by an 8-3 score at flight one,
and Nicolas Planchard teamed with Leon Seiz for an 8-2 victory at
flight three over Jacob Lorenz and Gabriel Seymour. Matthew Sherba
and Davey Nelson earned the doubles point for Charleston with an
8-0 win at flight two.
In singles, Lukas Winkelmann boosted his record to 9-0 with a 10-6
tiebreaker win over Gammell after the players split the first two
sets 6-1, 4-6 at flight one. Planchard also improved to 9-0 with a
6-3, 6-4 win over Sherba at flight two, but the win was sealed at
the bottom of the lineup as Taylor downed Nicholas Bakos 6-2, 6-2
at flight five and Seiz rolled past Varun Shah 6-1, 6-0 at flight
six. The Golden Eagles' singles points came from flights three and
four, as Okoth and Lorenz atoned for doubles defeats with
straight-set victories.
The Pioneers will continue their spring break trip on Tuesday at
11:30 a.m. against Shepherd.
