
Tusculum College claimed its eighth consecutive victory with an
8-1 win over Carson-Newman in South Atlantic Conference men's
tennis action Saturday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
The Pioneers (11-4, 5-1 SAC) posted a sweep of doubles play and won
all four singles matches that were played to completion against the
Eagles (5-10, 1-5 SAC). With the win, the Pioneers climbed into a
three-way tie in the loss column atop the SAC standings with
Anderson (8-1) and Lincoln Memorial (5-1) with three conference
matches remaining.
In doubles, Lukas Winkelmann and Nicolas Planchard defeated Juan
Sebastian Perez and Austin Mackay 8-5 at flight one, Jonas
Winkelmann teamed with John Taylor for an 8-6 win at flight two
over Paul Birdsong and Derek Holdway, and at flight three Paul
Wiederspahn and Joseph Elphingstone downed Jonathan Allen and
Dalton Moore 8-4.
In singles play, Planchard won at flight two as Birdsong retired
trailing 1-4 in the first set. Lukas Winkelmann then clinched the
match with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Perez at flight one, and Jonas
Winkelmann claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win over Holdway at flight three.
Wiederspahn won at flight four by a 6-4, 6-4 win over Mackay, and
Daniel Gianopulos was a 6-4, 6-1 winner at flight six over Moore.
Allen gave the Eagles their only point as he won the first set
against Taylor, who subsequently retired from the match.
The Pioneers put their winning streak on the line on Sunday at 1
p.m. against Newberry at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
