Tusculum College sophomore Paul Wiederspahn was named the South
Atlantic Conference Player of the Week in men's tennis for the week
ending March 31, the SAC office announced Tuesday.
Wiederspahn went 2-0 at number-four singles and at number-three
doubles as the Pioneers defeated Mars Hill and Lenoir-Rhyne to
extend their winning streak to seven consecutive matches. He is the
third straight Tusculum player to earn SAC Player of the Week
honors, as Nicolas Planchard captured the award two weeks ago and
Lukas Winkelmann claimed accolades last week.
The Wuppertal, Germany native posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Zach High
in Friday's 7-1 win over Mars Hill, and teamed with Joseph
Elphingstone for an 8-5 doubles win over High and Sam Lee. On
Saturday, the Pioneers shut out Lenoir-Rhyne 9-0 as Wiederspahn
downed Jordan Lawson 6-0, 6-2 in singles and partnered with
Elphingstone to defeat Lawson and Matthew Ledford 8-3 in
doubles.
Wiederspahn has won six straight singles matches and is 9-2 overall
this season, while he and Elphingstone have a 7-6 mark in doubles
including three consecutive wins.
The Pioneers (10-4, 4-1 SAC) host first-place Lincoln Memorial
University in a showdown for the conference lead on Thursday
afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
