
The Tusculum College men's tennis team won its sixth straight
match with a 7-1 victory at Mars Hill College in South Atlantic
Conference action Friday afternoon.
The Pioneers (9-4, 3-1 SAC) swept all five completed singles
matches from the Lions (2-7, 1-3 SAC) in their final road match of
the season. Tusculum plays its final five conference matches at
home at the Nichols Tennis Complex, where it has not competed since
Feb. 23 against Anderson.
Tusculum opened the match by winning two of the three doubles pro
sets. At flight two, John Taylor teamed with Jonas Winkelmann for
an 8-5 victory over Michael Melvill and Joel Sturgis, while Joseph
Elphingstone and Paul Wiederspahn earned an 8-5 win at flight three
against Zach High and Sam Lee.
In singles play, the Winkelmann brothers extended the Pioneer lead
to 4-1 as Lukas defeated Lucas Simm 6-2, 6-1 at flight one and
Jonas downed Melvill 6-1, 6-2 at flight three. Nicolas Planchard
provided the decisive point with a 6-4, 7-6 win at flight two over
Euquerio Guerrero.
Wiederspahn captured a 6-0, 6-1 win over High at flight four and
Taylor defeated Lee 6-3, 6-3 at flight five. The final match of the
day, at flight six between the Pioneers' Daniel Gianopulos and the
Lions' Sturgis, was stopped due to rain in the first set with
Gianopulos ahead 3-1.
The Pioneers host Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Nichols
Tennis Complex.
