
A doubles sweep helped propel the Tusculum College men's tennis
team to an 8-1 victory at Catawba College in South Atlantic
Conference action Saturday afternoon.
Playing less than 24 hours after a 5-4 upset of 32nd-ranked Wingate
on Friday, the Pioneers (8-4 overall, 2-1 SAC) were able to
dispatch the Indians (11-9 overall, 2-4 SAC) for their fifth
straight victory.
Tusculum took a 3-0 lead in doubles play as Lukas Winkelmann and
Nicolas Planchard posted an 8-1 win over Alex Macdonald and Matthew
Nicholson at flight one, Jonas Winkelmann and John Taylor beat Jack
Mordey and Mitchell McDonald 8-5 at flight two, and Paul
Wiederspahn and Joseph Elphingstone came away with an 8-1 win at
flight three over Jess Goodall and Aaron Vanhorenbeck.
The Pioneers clinched the match in the first half of singles play,
as Lukas Winkelmann beat Macdonald 6-2, 6-0 at flight one and
Planchard beat Goodall 6-2, 6-3 at flight two for the decisive
fifth point.
Jonas Winkelmann needed a tiebreaker to defeat Nicholson 10-7 after
splitting the first two sets 6-3 and 3-6 at flight three,
Wiederspahn downed McDonald 6-4, 6-0 at flight four and Danny
Gianopulos beat Vanhorenbeck 6-1, 6-1 at flight six.
The lone point for the Indians came from Mordey, who needed a
tiebreaker to win his match at flight five singles.
The Pioneers are scheduled to host North Greenville on Monday at 4
p.m. in a match postponed from Feb. 16.
