The Tusculum College men's tennis team won three singles
tiebreakers in a 5-4 victory over 32nd-ranked Wingate University in
a South Atlantic Conference match Friday afternoon, snapping the
Bulldogs' streak of consecutive conference victories at 30.
Lukas Winkelmann, Nicolas Planchard and Paul Wiederspahn all won in
a tiebreaker for the Pioneers (7-4, 1-1 SAC), who came back from a
2-1 doubles deficit to hand the Bulldogs (11-7, 5-1 SAC) their
first conference loss since 2010 and just their second loss in
their last 54 league matches. The Bulldogs had gone 9-0 in league
play in each of the last two years and are the defending Food Lion
SAC Tournament champions.
Trailing 2-1 through doubles play, the Pioneers knotted the match
at 2-2 as Jonas Winkelmann posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over Neal Towlson
at flight three. Wiederspahn gave the Pioneers a 3-2 lead as he
edged Roberto Hennis 10-6 in a tiebreaker at flight four after
splitting the first two sets 6-1, 4-6.
Lukas Winkelmann brought the Pioneers to the edge of victory as he
downed 30th-ranked Kennedy Cancelado 10-8 in a flight-one
tiebreaker following a 6-3, 4-6 battle in regulation. At flight
two, Planchard trailed Sebastian Hall 6-3 after the first set but
won the second set 6-2 to force a tiebreaker. Planchard then closed
out the upset with a 10-7 win in the tiebreaker. Ryan Forbes and
Josh Eardley earned wins at flights five and six for the Bulldogs
to cut the final margin to 5-4.
In doubles play, Wingate saw Hall and Eardley post an 8-2 win at
flight three, but Lukas Winkelmann and Planchard evened the match
with an 8-6 win over Towlson and Hennis at flight one. Cancelado
and Forbes tipped the advantage toward the Bulldogs by winning at
flight two 8-6 as the teams headed to singles.
The Pioneers will have a quick turnaround as they are scheduled to
play at Catawba Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
