Tusculum College sophomore Lukas Winkelmann was honored by the
South Atlantic Conference as the Player of the Week in men's tennis
Monday afternoon.
Playing out of the number-one position in the lineup in both
singles and doubles, Winkelmann won all three of his singles
matches in straight sets and teamed with Nicolas Planchard for
three doubles wins as the Pioneers went undefeated at the Spring
Break Bash in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
During the week, Winkelmann defeated Gustavo Echeverria of
Georgetown (Ky.) by a 6-3, 6-1 score, downed Matthew Sherba of
Charleston 6-1, 6-2 and posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Will Golinkin of
Dickinson.
In doubles play, Winkelmann and Planchard teamed up to win 24 of
their 26 games during their three victories. The duo defeated
Georgetown's Ryne Leas and Jacob Loveland 8-1, shut out
Charleston's Samual Humphrey and Dennis Okoth 8-0, and claimed an
8-1 victory over Dickinson's Golinkin and Chris Mueller-Wolf.
Winkelmann, the reigning SAC Freshman of the Year, is 8-1 in
singles play and 6-3 in doubles contests so far this season.
The Pioneers (6-4 overall, 0-1 SAC) are on the road for two
conference matches this weekend, beginning Friday at Wingate and
continuing Saturday at Catawba.
