Wins in three of the five completed singles matches were enough
to give the Tusculum College men's tennis team a 5-3 victory over
the University of Charleston Tuesday night.
The start of the match was pushed back nearly 10 hours by morning
rain, but the Pioneers (5-4) used a pair of sweeps in doubles
action to take and hold the lead over the Golden Eagles.
Lukas Winkelmann starred for the Pioneers in the match, winning his
singles contest 6-1, 6-2 at flight one over Matthew Sherba, after
teaming with Nicolas Planchard for an 8-0 win over Samuel Humphrey
and Dennis Okoth at flight one of doubles.
Also picking up singles wins were Paul Wiederspahn, who defeated
Okoth 6-2, 6-1 at flight four, and Daniel Gianopulos, who was a
6-1, 6-1 winner over Nicholas Bakos at flight six.
The Pioneers' other doubles win came when Jonas Winkelmann and John
Taylor shut out Sherba and Richard Williams by a score of 8-0.
Tusculum will wrap up its Spring Break trip Wednesday morning
against Division III Dickinson College.
