
Tusculum College rallied from a 4-1 deficit to defeat Mars Hill
College 5-4 in a South Atlantic Conference men's tennis match
Friday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
The Pioneers (10-8, 4-3 SAC) swept the final four singles matches
to come away with the victory over the Lions (6-9, 2-4 SAC), capped
by a comeback victory at flight four by Paul Wiederspahn that
wrapped up the win.
Wiederspahn dropped the first set to Guilherme Lima by a 6-3 score,
but came back to win the final two sets 6-1 and 6-4 in the last
match of the afternoon to give Tusculum its second straight
victory.
Trailing 4-1 after losing the first two singles matches, the
Pioneer comeback started at flight one where Lukas Winkelmann
defeated Lucas Simm 7-5, 6-2. A 6-0, 6-2 victory at flight six by
Stefan Vergeer over Zach High cut the Lion lead to 4-3, and Steven
Lin tied the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win at flight five over Michael
Melvill.
Mars Hill jumped to a 2-1 lead after doubles play, with Tusculum's
lone point coming at flight three where Drew Kiser and John Taylor
shut out Melvill and High by a score of 8-0.
The Pioneers will be back in action Saturday at noon with a SAC
match at Lincoln Memorial University.
