Tusculum men win SAC opener over Bears, 7-2

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Steven Lin recorded a pair of points, including the deciding tally at No. 4 singles to lead the Tusculum College men's tennis team to a 7-2 South Atlantic Conference victory over visiting Lenoir-Rhyne Friday at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

The Pioneers (4-3, 1-0 SAC) jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles. Lin and No. 2 doubles partner Oliver Smith posted an 8-1 pro set decision against the LRU pairing of Nathan Helms and David Jackson. TC's Gui Carvalho and Drew Kiser won their third flight match against Nate Summer and Graydon Dunn, 8-4. The Bears (1-3, 0-2 SAC) captured a point at No. 1 doubles as the duo of Tommy Brennan and Aroon Khatter edged TC's Tony Bujana and Luis Zamora, 9-8.

Zamora made the score 3-1 with his straight set (6-0, 6-0) win at No. 3 singles. Brennan posted his second win of the match with his 6-2, 6-3 win over Smith at the singles' top flight to bring the Bears within a point.

Bujana won a huge point at No. 2 singles as he rallied from a set down to defeat Khatter, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Lin sealed the victory for Tusculum with his 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles against LRU's David Jackson. Carvalho and Paulo dos Santos recorded wins at the fifth and sixth flights, respectively for the triumph.

Earlier in the day, Tusculum tennis coach Tommy Arnett, celebrated his 100th combined SAC win with the Pioneers. For Arnett, who is in his 10th season at Tusculum, he has posted a 52-9 SAC record with the women's team and a 49-11 league worksheet with the men, giving him a combined 101-20 SAC mark (.835).

Tusculum returns to action Monday morning at 8 a.m. as the Pioneers travel to Hilton Head Island, S.C. to face West Liberty.
