NEWBERRY EDGES MEN'S TENNIS 5-4 IN SAC BATTLE

Steven Lin GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Newberry College men's tennis team defeated No. 36 Tusculum College (9-7, 3-3 SAC) 5-4 in a South Atlantic Conference match on Friday afternoon, registering three wins in singles play to improve to 3-6 overall and 2-2 in league action.

Newberry won two of the day's three doubles matches, including an 8-6 win by Felipe Sobrinho and Jeremy Smith over Tusculum's duo of Drew Kiser and Thomas Rees. Lucas Mattos and Maxim Sukharev of Newberry defeated Leo Guaycurus and Henrique Rodrigues 8-3, while Hunter Beal and Steven Lin recorded an 8-3 win over Mark Boswell and Pavle Popovic for Tusculum's first point of the afternoon.

Rodrigues picked up TC's second point of the day by defeating Mattos (7-6 (7-4), 6-4). Lin won his match against Popovic in straight sets (6-1, 6-1), while Kiser defeated Boswell 6-4, 7-6. Sukharev defeated Rees (6-4, 4-6, 7-5) and Smith won his flight against Beal (6-1, 6-4), while Sobrinho defeated Guaycurus (6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7-1)) to clinch the match.

Tusculum returns to the court on Saturday when the Pioneers travel to Brevard for a 1 p.m. match.
