ROCK HILL, S.C. --- The Tusculum College men's
tennis team will be the top seed in the 2008 Food Lion South
Atlantic Conference Tournament announced league officials Sunday.
The Pioneers (17-1) will host No. 8 seed Lenoir-Rhyne College on
Tuesday at 3 p.m. in a quarterfinal round match at the Nichols
Tennis Complex on the Greeneville campus.
Tusculum won its third South Atlantic Conference men's tennis
championship with an undefeated league record (7-0), including 9-0
win over the Bears (0-9) in this year's first meeting. Admission to
Tuesday's match is free.
Tusculum is enjoying one of its best seasons in school history,
running off 12 straight wins heading into the post-season. The
Pioneers are in quest of their second SAC Tournament title, the
first coming in 2002 in Coach Tommy Arnett's inaugural campaign in
Greeneville. Since then, Arnett has led the Pioneers to seven
straight winning seasons, posting an impressive 102-41 record.
Tusculum's 17 wins this season are the second most in school
history, one shy of the 18 posted by the 2001-02 squad that went
18-2, including a 14-match winning streak.
The winner will advance to this weekend's semifinal and final
rounds, held at the Rock Hill Tennis Center in Rock Hill, S.C.
Tuesday's winner will face either Carson-Newman College or Wingate
University on Friday afternoon, beginning at 3 p.m.
The SAC Tournament championship match will be held Saturday at
noon from Rock Hill, with the winner earning an automatic bid to
next month's NCAA Division II Tournament.
