Pioneers come back for 2-1 win at Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. --- Gui Busato scored the tying goal in the 70th minute and Mo Bouta followed 7 1/2 minutes with the match-winner as Tusculum University rallied for a 2-1 win at Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer Saturday afternoon at the Smith Road Complex.

The Pioneers (7-3-3, 3-3-3 SAC) extended their unbeaten streak to four matches in October (2-0-2) by outshooting the Wolves (3-6-2, 1-5-2 SAC) by a 16-3 margin. Tusculum put just four of its 16 shot attempts on target, but were able to come away with the victory after falling behind early in the second half.

Tusculum outshot Newberry 8-0 in the first half, but could only put one of its shot attempts on goal despite having five corner kicks in the half.

In the second half, Newberry scored on its first shot of the match as a long cross by Seraphin Guetan was volleyed in by Uriel Zarracan for his sixth goal of the season at 55:34.

Tusculum nearly tied the score in the 65th minute, but a header from Artur Marques off a cross went off the far post.

Five minutes later, the Pioneers would catch a break as Wolves keeper Jacob Cotton tried to catch a crossing pass but contact caused the ball to bounce to Busato, and he delivered his second goal of the season at 69:33.

With just over 13 minutes left, the Pioneers were awarded a free kick just outside the top of the box, and Bouta cracked a shot to the left of the wall and inside the post for his fourth of the season at 77:02.

Newberry would draw a pair of free kicks in the final five minutes, but the final attempt from Guetan on a header went wide with 20 seconds left.

Nicolas Leite made one save in goal for the Pioneers to earn the victory, while Cotton had one save for the Wolves. The Pioneers had an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks in the match over the Wolves.

Tusculum will be home to play Wingate on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 4:30 p.m. at Pioneer Field. The Bulldogs played to a 2-2 draw with Lincoln Memorial on Saturday and will bring a 7-3-2 overall record and a 6-1-1 SAC record into the contest.
