Pioneers finish in 1-1 draw with Limestone

GAFFNEY, S.C. --- Goals by Mark Radoki of Limestone University and Ignacio Alconchel of Tusculum University came 37 seconds apart early in the second half as the Saints and Pioneers played to a 1-1 tie Saturday afternoon in a South Atlantic Conference men's soccer match.

Radoki scored at 55:39 to give the Saints (4-2-4, 4-1-2 SAC) a 1-0 lead, but Alconchel responded on a header at 56:16 for the Pioneers (0-6-4, 0-4-3 SAC), who played their third draw in their last four matches. Tusculum has not trailed by more than one goal at any point in each of their seven conference matches.

Limestone outshot Tusculum by an 11-3 margin, but Pioneer keeper Bruno De Freitas made three saves while Saints keeper Wouter Dollevoet did not record a save in the match. The Saints also had an 8-1 edge in corner kicks over the Pioneers in the match.

The Saints had the first shot of the match in the seventh minute, as a header from close range by Stefan Roeb was knocked away by De Freitas. Limestone would follow up in the 16th minute with a shot from just outside 20 yards from Antonio Ferreira that sailed directly to De Freitas.

Limestone would threaten with a series of corner kicks midway through the half, including one that resulted in a header from Roeb that went high and wide of the goal. In the 32nd minute, Limestone's Simon Zahlaka volleyed a long pass just wide of the target, and the Saints would end the half 0-0 despite outshooting the Pioneers by a 5-0 margin.

Tusculum would get the first shot attempt of the second half as Alconchel broke through the Limestone defense and took a shot from the top of the box that missed wide to the right.

Limestone would take a 1-0 lead at 55:39 as Roeb chipped a pass from the top of the box to Radoki, who headed home his fifth goal of the season.

Just 37 seconds later, Tusculum's Linus Salomonsen delivered a perfect service from the far left side to a cutting Alconchel, who headed the ball to the far post past Dollevoet for his second goal of the season and a 1-1 tie.

Limestone's Alexander Render had the final three shots of the match, sending a header off a corner kick wide of the goal in the 72nd minute before being thwarted by a sprawling De Freitas from 10 yards straight on with just over four minutes to play.

Tusculum was called for 11 fouls in the match to five for Limestone, and each team was shown one yellow card.

The Pioneers will travel to Emory & Henry on Wednesday, Oct. 12 for a 7:30 p.m. match with the Wasps, who are 0-9 overall and 0-7 in the SAC in their first season in the conference.
