Anderson shuts out Pioneers, 3-0

ANDERSON, S.C. --- Alexandre Cox-Ashwood scored two goals to lead Anderson University to a 3-0 victory over Tusculum University in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action Saturday night.

Cox-Ashwood scored in the 23rd and 58th minutes and Bar Galanti added an insurance goal in the 88th minute for the Trojans (5-2-1, 2-2-1 SAC), who outshot the Pioneers (1-6-1, 0-4-1 SAC) by a 16-3 margin. Gal Elyashiv made two saves in goal to complete the clean sheet for the Trojans.

Anderson had a scoring chance in the opening minute, but Cox-Ashwood shot wide off a corner kick from Agustin Ortiz. Ortiz redirected a shot in the fourth minute that was stopped on the ground by Tusculum keeper Bruno De Freitas, and Cox-Ashwood just missed the far post in the fifth minute.

De Freitas made a diving stop on a blast from Santiago Alvarez in the 13th minute, and the teams settled in for a defensive battle as neither team had a shot attempt for the next 10 minutes.

The next shot would give Anderson a 1-0 lead as Joao Martinho crossed the ball toward the goal, which a cutting Cox-Ashwood deftly redirected to the far post past De Freitas for his sixth goal of the season at 22:21.

De Freitas thwarted Ortiz twice more in the half, making a sliding save off a blast from the top of the box in the 26th minute and shorthopping a long free kick in the 28th minute. Meanwhile, the Tusculum offense had no answers for Anderson as the Pioneers were kept without a shot attempt in the first half.

In the second half, Ortiz had a free kick just outside the box, but his shot went over the wall and curled wide to the left in the 49th minute. Tusculum's first shot on goal came in the 52nd minute, as Damien Baltide's effort from the far right side was grabbed by Anderson's Elyashiv.

Cox-Ashwood scored his second goal of the match at 57:28 as he volleyed a header pass by Andres Osorio for a 2-0 Anderson advantage.

Elyashiv made his best stop of the night as he stretched out to deflect a blast by Baltide from 20 yards out in the 67th minute. Ortiz was stymied again by De Freitas as he punched out a free kick from the top of the box in the 84th minute.

Anderson went up 3-0 with 2:25 remaining on a diving header by Galanti off a cross from Bryce Goodwyn, for his first goal of the season.

De Freitas finished with five saves in goal for the Pioneers, who had two corner kicks to five for the Trojans.

Tusculum will return home to face Newberry in its only match of the week on Saturday, Oct. 9 beginning at 4:30 p.m.
