Sindre Welo scored 59 seconds into overtime to give
Carson-Newman University a 1-0 victory over Tusculum College in a
South Atlantic Conference men's soccer match Wednesday night at
Pioneer Field.
Welo's fifth goal of the season gave the Eagles (11-4-0, 7-3-0 SAC)
their sixth consecutive victory and sent the Pioneers (5-10-0,
2-8-0 SAC) to their fifth overtime loss of the season. Nine of the
Pioneers' 10 losses have come by one goal including seven on their
home field.
Carson-Newman had the better of play against Tusculum in the match,
finishing with an 18-5 advantage in shots and a 10-3 edge in corner
kicks. Pioneer keeper Ashley Elsey kept the Eagles off the
scoreboard by making a season-high 11 saves, including six in the
second half when Carson-Newman had a 12-2 shot edge.
Carson-Newman nearly broke open the scoring in the 60th minute, but
a header by Kristian Speake off a corner kick hit the post.
Tusculum's best scoring chances came off the foot of Tyler Linkous,
who took all five shots for the Pioneers in the match, including
two that were saves by Eagles keeper Rumwald Le Guevel.
The Pioneers will conclude their regular season on Saturday at
Newberry beginning at 3 p.m.
