Lincoln Memorial University scored two goals in just over a
minute late in the first half and made them stand for a 2-1 victory
over Tusculum College in a South Atlantic Conference men's soccer
match at Pioneer Field Wednesday night.
Callum Home scored the eventual winning goal on a penalty kick in
the 37th minute just after Harry Solomons had netted the tying goal
in the 36th minute for the Railsplitters (8-5-1, 5-3-1 SAC).
Roberto Pimentel scored his fifth goal of the season just 1:16 into
the match for the Pioneers (5-8-0, 2-6-0 SAC), who fell to 3-7 in
matches decided by one goal. Seven of Tusculum's eight conference
matches have had a margin of one goal, including three that were
decided in overtime.
After Pimentel's early goal, the Pioneers nearly took a 2-0 lead at
the 14-minute mark but Cody Kammerzell's header ricocheted off the
crossbar. The Railsplitters found the equalizer at 35:34 as
Solomons' shot from the left side got through Pioneer keeper Victor
Ohlin.
Almost exactly one mnute later, Home put a shot off the crossbar
but got another chance as the Pioneers were called for a foul in
the box. Home beat Ohlin on the penalty at 36:39 for his first goal
of the season and a 2-1 LMU lead.
In the second half, the Pioneers put a pair of shots on goal in the
opening 7 1/2 minutes but were unable to sustain pressure against
the Railsplitter defense. Mario Pinto, who entered the match with a
team-high 12 goals for Lincoln Memorial, had several excellent
scoring chances after pulling Ohlin off his line, but saw his shots
just trickle past the post.
LMU finished the match with a 14-8 shot edge over Tusculum, while
the Pioneers had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Ohlin finished
with four saves in goal for the Pioneers, as did his counterpart
Marcel Barwanietz for the Railsplitters.
Tusculum will be back home Sunday afternoon against Coker at 3:30
p.m. at Pioneer Field.
