Declan Stimson scored a pair of goals for Catawba College as the
Indians defeated Tusculum College 3-1 in South Atlantic Conference
men's soccer action Saturday night.
Kevin Scott also scored for the Indians (6-3-1, 3-3-1 SAC), who led
2-0 at halftime and finished with a 14-6 advantage in shots over
the Pioneers (3-7-0, 1-5-0 SAC).
Ricardo da Silva netted the lone goal of the match for the Pioneers
in the 58th minute to cut the Indians' lead to 2-1, but Stimson
answered just over 12 minutes later to give Catawba insurance.
Scott opened the scoring at 12:21 on a give-and-go play with Kenny
Bonilla, then Stimson notched his first goal of the night at 42:01
as a three-quarter field kick by goalkeeper Frankie Cardelle
ricocheted off the crossbar to Stimson, who put home the rebound.
The goal marked the first time all season that Tusculum trailed by
more than one goal in a match.
A free kick by the Pioneers' Roberto Pimentel led to the Pioneers'
only goal, as da Silva headed home the service to cut the Indians'
lead to 2-1 at 57:24. Tusculum nearly tied the match with just over
30 minutes left, but a shot from Matias Rubio went off the
post.
Stimson restored the Indians' two-goal lead at 69:47 off a feed by
Matt Wilkinson, and the Pioneers could muster only two shots over
the remaining 20 minutes. Tusculum had five shots in the second
half after being held to just one attempt in the first half by the
Catawba defense.
Cardelle made one save in goal for the Indians, while the Pioneers
split time in goal with Ashley Elsey making three saves in the
first half and Victor Ohlin stopping a pair of shots in the second
half.
The Pioneers will continue on the road Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at
Barton in a non-conference match.
