Caleb Hall scored with 1:01 left in double overtime as Brevard
College took advantage of playing two men up to defeat Tusculum
College 2-1 in a South Atlantic Conference men's soccer match
Wednesday afternoon.
Hall's goal gave the Tornados (3-7-0, 1-4-0 SAC) an overtime win
over the Pioneers (3-6-0, 1-4-0 SAC) for the second consecutive
year, and sent Tusculum to its fourth overtime loss of the season.
All six of the Pioneers' losses have been by one goal, and Tusculum
has not trailed by more than one goal at any point in each of its
first nine matches.
Ryan McPhillips atoned for a missed penalty kick early in the match
by giving the Tornados a 1-0 lead in the 77th minute, but the
Pioneers' Roberto Pimentel connected from long range with 4:44
remaining to send the match into overtime.
Already a man down due to a red card issued in the 82nd minute, the
Pioneers had another player sent off in the 97th minute leaving
them nine against 11 for the final 13 minutes of the match. Brevard
had one shot near the end of the first overtime period, then poured
eight shots on the Tusculum goal in the second overtime before Hall
put home a rebound just one minute before the final whistle.
McPhillips had the best scoring chance by far in the first half,
but Tusculum keeper Ashley Elsey stopped him on a penalty kick just
9:36 into the match to keep the match scoreless. The Pioneers
outshot the Tornados 5-4 in the first half, and had several scoring
opportunities in the second before McPhillips converted his fifth
goal at 76:58 on a feed from Marcelo Betcer.
Pimentel's third goal of the season in the 86th minute sent the
match to overtime, and the shorthanded Pioneers had one shot before
being put down two men with 3:14 left in the first extra period. In
addition to its nine shots in overtime, the Tornados were flagged
four times for offsides.
Elsey finished with seven saves in the match for the Pioneers, who
wound up being outshot 17-15 by the Tornados after controlling the
category in regulation by a margin of 14-8. Heath Turner was called
upon to make three saves in goal for Brevard.
Tusculum took six corners to four by Brevard, while the Tornados
were called for 18 fouls to eight by the Pioneers. The match also
featured six yellow cards in addition to the two reds shown the
Pioneers.
Tusculum will look to get back in the win column on Saturday at
Catawba in a SAC match beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Salisbury, North
Carolina.
