Lukas Pousset converted a penalty kick 24 seconds into overtime
to lift Francis Marion University to a 2-1 victory over Tusculum
College in non-conference men's soccer action Saturday night at
Pioneer Field.
The Patriots (3-0-2) edged the Pioneers (2-2-0) in a match that at
one point late in the second half saw the teams tied in shots,
shots on goal, corner kicks, saves and fouls. Francis Marion
finished the match with a 12-9 advantage in shots over Tusculum,
while both teams took six corner kicks.
After 90 minutes were unable to determine a winner, the Patriots
needed less than 30 seconds in overtime to pull out the win. A foul
in the box was called against Tusculum, and Pousset delivered his
first goal of the season to send Francis Marion home with the
victory.
Francis Marion had taken a 1-0 lead early in the first half as
Tyler Norris headed home a goal off a corner by Sven Ricke at
46:47, but Tusculum responded at 54:40 on the third goal of the
season by Jonathan Spicher to deadlock the score at 1-1.
Tusculum had the two best scoring chances of the first half, but
Spicher hit the post in the ninth minute and a would-be goal by
Roberto Pimentel in the 43rd minute was waved off by offsides.
Pioneer keeper Ashley Elsey made three saves in the loss for the
Pioneers, while Nick Stover had two saves for the Patriots.
Tusculum will be home Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. for a non-conference
match against Clayton State at Pioneer Field.
