Cody Kammerzell scored the game-winning goal with six minutes
remaining as Tusculum College erased a pair of second-half deficits
in a 3-2 win at Mars Hill College in South Atlantic Conference
men's soccer action Wednesday night.
Kammerzell scored on a rebound of a shot by Jonathan Spicher to
give the Pioneers (2-1-0, 1-1-0 SAC) the victory over the Lions
(1-3-0, 1-1-0 SAC) in a match that saw all five goals scored in the
second half.
Mark Patterson had tied the match less than 90 seconds earlier on a
penalty kick after Mars Hill had taken a 2-1 lead at 65:21 on a
goal by Christian McArthur. Kammerzell's goal gave the Pioneers
their first lead of the night, and the Tusculum defense held the
Lions without a shot attempt in the final five minutes of the
match.
The teams played a scoreless first half, with the Lions holding a
5-4 edge in shots, before Mars Hill broke through at 50:33 as Alex
Mullen headed home his fourth goal of the season off an assist by
Serge Kebbeh.
The Pioneers leveled the match at 1-1 at 59:39 when Spicher headed
home a corner from Kyle Dickson for his second goal of the season.
The tie would be short-lived as McArthur scored just under six
minutes later for a 2-1 Lions lead. Tusculum nearly tied the match
in the 77th minute, but a shot by Matias Rubio hit the post.
Patterson knotted the contest with just under 7 1/2 minutes left
when a foul resulted in a yellow card against the Lions and a
penalty kick for the Pioneers. Patterson drilled his second penalty
goal of the season and third overall to even the contest at 2-2,
setting up Kammerzell's heroics.
Tusculum finished the match with a 14-13 lead in shots over Mars
Hill, with both teams putting six shots on goal. Freshman Ashley
Elsey made four stops for the Pioneers while Oliver Pannell had
three stops for the Lions.
The Pioneers will play their home opener Saturday night at 7 p.m.
at Pioneer Field against Francis Marion University in a
non-conference match.
