Pioneers kick off season with 3-0 win at King
Box score BRISTOL, Tenn. ---

Freshman Mark Patterson scored two goals in his collegiate debut to help visiting Tusculum College to a 3-0 victory over King University in the Pioneers' 2013 men's soccer season opener Wednesday afternoon.

Patterson scored in the 45th and 86th minutes for the Pioneers (1-0-0), who finished the match with a commanding 17-4 advantage in shots over the Tornado (0-2-1).

The Pioneers carried play for much of the first half, and were rewarded with nine seconds on the clock as Patterson headed home a corner kick by Kyle Dickson for a 1-0 lead.

Just 23 seconds into the second half, Pimentel extended the Tusculum lead to 2-0 as he took a through ball from Cody Kammerzell and delivered the goal for the Pioneers. Kammerzell nearly made it 3-0 just under two minutes later but found the crossbar with his shot.

King had its best scoring chance of the game in the 59th minute, but a header from Pete Griffith caromed off the post and Tusculum keeper Ashley Elsey made the save on the rebound attempt by Kendale Liburd.

Patterson finished off the scoring with 4:57 left as he scored on a penalty kick for his second goal of the afternoon and a 3-0 Pioneer lead.

In addition to the lead in shots, the Pioneers had a 6-1 edge over the Tornado in corner kicks. The teams combined for 22 fouls and five yellow cards in the contest.

Elsey made one save to pick up the shutout in his first appearance for the Pioneers, while Kari Sveinsson had three stops for the Tornado in the loss.

Tusculum opens South Atlantic Conference action on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at league newcomer Queens University of Charlotte.
