Pioneers to open spring schedule Saturday at Virginia Tech

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. ---

Matches with three NCAA Division I teams highlight a five-game spring schedule for the Tusculum College men's soccer team, beginning Saturday with a contest at Virginia Tech and continuing through April 6.

The Pioneers, who finished 7-8-3 overall and 3-4-2 in the South Atlantic Conference last season, will battle the Hokies on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Blacksburg. Virginia Tech went 7-10-3 overall in 2012, including a win over North Carolina State in the opening round of the ACC Tournament.

Tusculum will then host local rival ETSU on Thursday, March 28 at 6 p.m. The Bucs posted a 10-6-4 overall record last fall, including a 5-2-1 mark in the Atlantic Sun Conference and a trip to the league semifinals.

The Pioneers will continue their home schedule on Wednesday, April 3 at 6 p.m. against King. The teams have had 23 recorded all-time meetings, with the Tornado holding a 13-8-2 edge. Tusculum and King last met in 2010, playing to a 2-2 tie.

Tusculum finishes its spring schedule on Saturday, April 6 with a pair of matches in Boiling Springs, N.C. The Pioneers will face host Gardner-Webb at 12 noon followed by a match with SAC rival Newberry at 1:40. Gardner-Webb, which played five nationally-ranked teams last season, finished 4-14-2 overall and 3-5-2 in the Big South. All-time, the Pioneers are 4-1-1 against the Runnin' Bulldogs in a series that spanned 1996 to 1999.

The Pioneers have enjoyed success against the Wolves over the years, owning a 12-0-2 lead in the all-time series. Tusculum defeated Newberry 2-1 in the teams' regular-season meeting on Oct. 7 in Greeneville.
