Two early goals sparked Mars Hill College to a 4-2 victory over
Tusculum College in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action
Thursday night at Pioneer Field.
Stephen Bivens scored two goals for the Lions (6-1-0, 2-0-0 SAC),
who scored four goals on just seven shots to pick up the victory
over the Pioneers (3-3-1, 0-2-0 SAC).
Felipe Ferraro and Shadi Harb each had a goal and an assist for
Mars Hill, which led 4-0 before Tusculum struck twice in the final
20 minutes on goals by Roberto Pimentel and Philip Wistrom.
After Ferraro rang a shot off the goalpost in the opening 30
seconds of play, he was able to connect for the first goal of the
match at 6:06 on a give-and-go with Alex Mullen. Just 1:19 later,
Bivens scored the first of his two goals as Harb passed wide to
Ferraro, who found Bivens behind the defense.
Trailing 2-0 entering the second half, the Pioneers were forced to
play a man down after being shown a red card in the 51st minute.
Harb took advantage of the loss in the Tusculum defense and scored
his fourth goal of the year at 58:49 for a 3-0 Mars Hill lead.
Bivens added his second of the match and fourth of the year at
69:41 to give the Lions a 4-0 advantage.
One minute after Bivens' goal, Pimentel responded for the Pioneers
at 70:40 to put Tusculum on the scoreboard. Wistrom capped the
scoring at 82:29 with assists to Fredrik Muren and Stephen
McNeill.
Tusculum finished the match with a 14-7 advantage in shots, but
just a slim 6-5 lead in shots on goal. The Lions took the only two
corner kicks of the contest in the first half, and were called for
18 fouls to nine by the Pioneers.
Andy Goellner finished with one save in goal for the Pioneers,
while Zac Scott tallied four stops for the Lions before sitting
down in the 81st minute.
Tusculum will return to action Saturday at 3:30 p.m. with a SAC
