Tusculum College and Barton College played to a 1-1 draw in
non-conference men's soccer action Sunday afternoon at Pioneer
Field.
The Pioneers (3-2-1) outshot the Bulldogs (1-4-1) by a 19-6 margin
but were thwarted by Barton keeper Vasily Yakimkin, who finished
with 10 saves in the match.
Tusculum took a 1-0 lead at 31:01 when Cody Kammerzell took a quick
pass from Stephen McNeill and beat Yakimkin to the near side for
this third goal of the season.
The Pioneers nursed the lead until the 65:35 mark, when a corner
kick by the Bulldogs caromed around in the box before settling on
the foot of Archer Bane, who netted his third goal of the
season.
Barton had the best scoring chance in overtime, but a shot from
Kevin Strassburger bent just wide of the far post midway through
the first extra period. Tusculum had the other four shots of
overtime, but could not find the game-winner.
In addition to its shot advantage, Tusculum finished with a 12-3
edge over Barton in corner kicks. The teams combined for 13 fouls
in the match, while the Bulldogs were flagged twice for offsides to
once by the Pioneers.
Andy Goellner saw three shots on goal in his 110 minutes between
the pipes for the Pioneers, and finished with two saves. Yakimkin
had four saves in each half of regulation and added one stop in
each of the overtime periods.
The Pioneers will resume South Atlantic Conference action Wednesday
afternoon at 4 p.m. when they host Mars Hill at Pioneer Field.
