KANSAS CITY, Kan. ---
Tusculum College freshman defender Matias Rubio has been named
to the 2011 National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division
II Men's All-Southeast Region Third Team, the NSCAA announced
Tuesday.
Rubio (Bradenton, Fla.) is the 31st Pioneer all-time to earn
All-Region status, and the 28th since Tusculum joined NCAA Division
II in 1999. Earlier this fall, he was a second-team Daktronics
All-Southeast Region honoree and he was a first-team All-South
Atlantic Conference pick. Rubio was one of seven freshmen to make
the All-Region team.
Rubio helped the Pioneers to a 6-1-2 league record and a
second-place finish in the final standings. He made 16 starts for
the Pioneers, playing a key part in limiting opponents to a total
of 20 goals during the regular season. Rubio played 1,511 of a
possible 1,516 minutes, missing only five minutes due to a brief
injury substitution early in the year, and scored his first goal of
the season in the Pioneers' 4-0 win over Carson-Newman on Oct.
12.
Tusculum finished the 2011 season with a 7-8-3 overall record,
going unbeaten in 10 of its last 11 regular-season games after
opening the season with six straight losses.
