The Tusculum College men's soccer team dropped its third
straight one-goal decision on Sunday, falling 1-0 to Nova
Southeastern in action at the Stanno Tournament at Pioneer
Field.
Tyree Clarke scored the only goal of the afternoon six minutes into
the second half, and the visiting Sharks (2-1-1) held on for the
win despite being outshot 10-8 by the Pioneers (0-4-0).
"Credit to Nova, they did what they had to do to win the game,"
said Tusculum head coach Allen Vital. "In the end, we showed our
inexperience. We were not patience enough and got frustrated. We
have to pick it up and try to regroup and hopefully do better."
Clarke collected a pass from Halil Tozar and found the net behind
Tusculum keeper Andy Goellner at 51:06 to give Nova Southeastern
its second one-goal win of the weekend. The Sharks defeated
Carson-Newman 1-0 in overtime on Friday.
The teams played a scoreless first half, with Clarke having the
best scoring opportunity just shy of the 27-minute mark but
Goellner denied the shot to preserve the deadlock.
After Nova Southeastern took a 1-0 lead, the Pioneers applied
pressure on the Sharks net in search of the equalizer. Tusculum
took five straight shots at the Nova Southeastern goal, with
Roberto Pimentel having the best chance with 12:40 left. However,
Andrea Giombetti saved what would be the Pioneers' final shot of
the match.
Tusculum finished with a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks over Nova
Southeastern, while the Sharks were called for 11 fouls and four
offsides to five fouls and two offsides for the Pioneers. Both
Goellner and Giombetti made one save in goal for their respective
sides.
In the final game of the Stanno Tournament, 10th-ranked Barry
defeated Carson-Newman 2-1 on a goal by Mark Anderson with 5:49
remaining in the second half.
The Pioneers will host Limestone on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in a
non-conference match.
