NEWBERRY, S.C. --- Goals by Horton McKinney and Javier Portillo just over a minute apart in the second half led Tusculum College to a 3-2 victory at Newberry College in a South Atlantic Conference men's soccer match Saturday afternoon at the Newberry Soccer Field.

Despite being outshot by a 26-15 margin, the Pioneers earned the win to improve to 2-4-3 overall and 1-2 in the SAC. The Wolves dropped to 1-6-2 overall and 0-2-1 in the SAC with the loss.

The Pioneers jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 18:28 when Petr Buzyan scored his second goal of the season following a free kick by Andres Jarquin. The Wolves came back just before halftime when Dylan Guice connected off a rebound for his first goal of the year with 1:01 left in the half.

Joao Delgado's second goal of the season with 1:22 gone in the second half, pushed Newberry on top 2-1. However, the Pioneers poured on the pressure and McKinney notched the equalizer off a corner kick by Jarquin at 55:57 for his second goal of the season.

Barely over a minute later, Portillo scored his third goal of the season off his own rebound to give the Pioneers a 3-2 lead at 57:09.

From there, the Tusculum defense stood tall and allowed Newberry just four shots over the final 33 minutes, all off target, and none in the final 10 minutes.

Both teams finished with five corner kicks in the match, while the Pioneers were called for 14 fouls to 11 by the Wolves.

Andy Goellner tallied eight saves in goal to earn the win for the Pioneers. Newberry started Joel Johnson between the pipes and he made three saves in the first half before yielding to Patrick Sweatt, who finished with three second-half stops.

The Pioneers will play their third straight road game on Wednesday night at Mars Hill, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
