GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Freshman David Montes' first collegiate goal proved to be the equalizer in the 88th minute as Tusculum College and Belmont Abbey College played to a 1-1 draw Wednesday night at Pioneer Field in men's soccer action. The Pioneers (1-2-3) record their second tie in as many home matches, while the Crusaders move their record to 2-3-2.

Jose Penaloza opened up the scoring in the 10th minute as he headed a shot off of TC keeper Andy Goellner that caromed off the Denver, Colo. sophomore and bounced over the goal line in for a 1-0 Belmont Abbey lead. Penaloza's goal was set up by a Matt Dolan crossing pass from the near side from six yards out.

Goellner would be solid for the remainder of the match, recording six saves in the final 100 minutes of the match.

Tusculum out-shot the Crusaders by a 20-19 margin, including 17-13 in regulation.

Belmont Abbey looked to have the match in hand, with keeper John Max Bolling tallying 11 saves on the night. But at the 87:10 mark, Montes blasted a shot from 25 yards out that hit inside the near post and bounced into the far side of the net to level the match at 1-1.

In the first overtime period, Tusculum registered the only shot as Russell Sexton fired a blast from just outside the box, which sailed high.

The second overtime saw Tusculum take the first shot of the period, as Javier Portillo sailed a shot into the box from 27 yards away, but was hauled in by Bolling on the line.

In the 103rd minute, forward Ross Smith, had his shot blocked in the box by Horton McKinney, with the rebound header by Conor Wells hauled in by Goellner to preserve the tie.

Tusculum will host Wingate University on Saturday for a 4 p.m. match in the Pioneers' South Atlantic Conference lid-lifter.
