
NEWBERRY, S.C. --- A scoring run that spanned 30 minutes propelled Newberry College to a 27-5 victory over Tusculum University in South Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse Saturday at Setzler Field.
The 10th-ranked Wolves (5-0, 1-0 SAC) ran off 17 consecutive goals after falling behind just 17 seconds into the match against the Pioneers (0-5, 0-2 SAC). Scott Reed scored seven goals for Newberry and Mac Ryan scored three times for the Wolves, who received goals from 12 different players and outshot the Pioneers by a 65-21 margin.
Clay Mendez led Tusculum with four goals and Wesley Phillips had a goal for the Pioneers, who received two assists from Ben Hobday and one each from Nicholas Drennan and Bryce Grimball.
Newberry had a 53-15 edge in ground balls over Tusculum, propelled by a 29-7 advantage in faceoffs by the Wolves over the Pioneers. Connor Bates was 16-for-17 on faceoffs and had 12 ground balls for Newberry, while Colby Rogers was 13-for-19 with eight ground balls.
Mendez scored at 17 seconds for a 1-0 Tusculum lead, but Newberry would build a 10-1 lead by the end of the first quarter and 16-1 at halftime. Mendez broke the drought early in the third quarter, and Mendez and Phillips scored 14 seconds apart midway through the period. Newberry would lead 21-4 heading to the fourth, with Mendez netting his fourth of the day with 3:22 left.
Brenden Pecora played all 60 minutes in goal for the Pioneers and made 15 saves, with a quartet of Newberry keepers combining for eight saves.
Tusculum will return to Pioneer Field for seven of its next nine games, starting Tuesday, March 5 against Lander beginning at 4 p.m. The Bearcats (5-1), who were nationally-ranked earlier this season, defeated North Greenville 16-14 on the road on Friday.
