Pioneers ranked in USILA Top 20 for first time in program history

PERRY, N.Y. --- The Tusculum men's lacrosse team reached a milestone Monday afternoon when the Pioneers learned that they were ranked in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division II Coaches Poll for the first time in program history.

The Pioneers are ranked 20th in this week's USILA poll after picking up wins over Lincoln Memorial (13-12 in overtime) and Queens University of Charlotte (12-9) last week to improve their record to 8-2. Tusculum had been receiving votes each of the three previous weeks before moving into the Top 20 this week.

Tusculum is one of three South Atlantic Conference teams ranked in this week's poll, along with Lenoir-Rhyne (7th) and Wingate (16th). The Pioneers lost 12-11 in overtime to Lenoir-Rhyne on March 15, and will host Wingate in their regular-season finale on April 22 at Pioneer Field.

The Pioneers are ranked in the top 10 in eight different statistical categories by the NCAA, including second in man-up offense (51.4 percent), points per game (24.3) and assists per game (9.4). Tusculum is also ranked fifth in scoring offense (14.9 goals per game) and in man-down defense (84.0 percent), seventh in ground balls per game (35.8) and ninth in both scoring margin (plus-5.7 goals per game) and winning percentage (80.0 percent).

Limestone is the only undefeated team in Division II and ranked first in this week's USILA poll, followed by Le Moyne, Adelphi, Mercyhurst and Merrimack in the top five. Tampa, which handed Tusculum its only other defeat in the season opener on Feb. 5, is ranked 12th this week, up one spot from last week's survey.

The Pioneers, who are in sole possession of second place in the conference at 4-1, will continue their schedule on Sunday, April 9 with a 2 p.m. South Atlantic Conference match at Coker.
