David Fernandes scored five goals, all in the first quarter, and
Ben Boyd and Kellen Asmundson added four goals apiece as Tusculum
College wrapped up its inaugural season of men's lacrosse with a
25-7 victory over Alderson Broaddus University Thursday night at
Pioneer Field.
The Pioneers (5-8) set season highs for goals, shots (68), ground
balls (52), caused turnovers (18), opponent turnovers (35) and
man-up goals (4) against the Battlers (0-13). Eleven different
players scored goals for Tusculum in the victory.
Fernandes scored all five of his goals in a span of 9 1/2 minutes
in the opening quarter to help the Pioneers to a 7-3 lead.
Asmundson netted a pair of goals in the second quarter as Tusculum
led 15-4 at intermission.
In the third quarter, Jack Timerson had a pair of goals to boost
the Pioneer lead to 20-5, and Asmundson and Boyd each scored twice
during a five-goal fourth quarter.
Tusculum excelled with the man advantage in the game, scoring four
times in five extra-man opportunities. Timerson, Fernandes,
Asmundson and Boyd each scored man-up goals for the Pioneers, while
the man-down defense killed off all five Battler opportunities.
Timerson finished with three goals and an assist for the Pioneers,
while Sean Gilbane and Steven Raimondi each scored twice. Darrin
Wilson had a goal and two assists for Tusculum, with single goals
coming from Ross Parsons, Jake Smith, Timothy Drumtra and Benjamin
Thompson.
Nick Williams led Alderson Broaddus with three goals, with one goal
each coming from Joe Ravenell, Keir Yonge, Joel Hicks and Isaiah
Sager.
On defense, Smith excelled for the Pioneers with a game-high nine
ground balls to go along with three caused turnovers. Boyd had
three ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Parsons and
Coogan Lethco had five ground balls apiece.
On faceoffs, Thomas Loudon won 12-of-26 and had seven ground balls
for the Pioneers. Josh Jakell went 12-for-19 at the dot for the
Battlers, collecting a team-high nine ground balls in the
process.
John Perrucci played the first three quarters in goal for the
Pioneers, finishing with eight saves while allowing just five
goals. Eddie Schoenig played the fourth quarter and finished with
three saves.
For Alderson Broaddus, Josh McCullough had eight saves in 40
minutes of action with Andrew Fox tallying four saves in 20 minutes
between the pipes.
Boyd finished the season as the Pioneers' leader in both goals (26)
and points (34), while Asmundson added 22 goals and Fernandes
netted 15. Wilson had a team-high 12 assists and ranked third on
the team with 22 points, with Timerson also hitting double figures
in both goals (11) and assists (10).
On defense, Chapman led the Pioneers with 51 ground balls and 23
caused turnovers, followed closely by Smith with 50 ground balls
and 21 caused turnovers.
In goal, Perrucci tallied 149 saves and a .532 save percentage to
go along with a 12.16 goals against average. Schoenig appeared in
six games and had a 12.11 goals against average and 22 stops.
Tusculum defeats Alderson Broaddus 25-7 to wrap up inaugural season
