Queens University scored the game's first four goals and went on
to claim a 14-5 win over Tusculum College in a South Atlantic
Conference men's lacrosse contest Saturday afternoon.
Casey Hock led the Royals (8-4, 5-1 SAC) with three goals as 10
different players recorded at least one goal for Queens in the
victory. The Royals led 4-1 after one quarter, held a 7-1 lead at
halftime and were on top 10-3 after three quarters, while finishing
with a 43-30 advantage in shots.
Kellen Asmundson led the Pioneers (4-7, 0-6 SAC) with two goals
while Ben Boyd, Sean Gilbane and Brad Sage had one goals apiece.
Boyd also had one assist for the Pioneers, along with Mitch
Chapman, Ross Parsons and Darrin Wilson.
After a scoreless first five minutes, Evan Farkas and Patrick
Thomas scored 12 seconds apart to give the Royals a quick 2-0 lead.
Farkas would add a second goal and Garrett Chan would also score
before Asmundson tallied with 2:21 left in the first quarter to cut
the Royals' lead to 4-1 after one quarter.
In the second quarter, Queens scored all three goals as Matthew
Michael, Hock and Kenneth Stryker helped give the Royals a 7-1 lead
at the half. Spencer Corkery and Hock scored in the first four
minutes of the third quarter for a 9-1 Queens lead before Boyd
tallied with 6:53 remaining in the quarter. Patrick Murphy and
Asmundson exchanged goals in the final 4 1/2 minutes of the third
quarter to make it a 10-3 Queens lead heading to the fourth
quarter.
The Royals scored four straight goals to go on top 14-3 with 6:09
remaining before the Pioneers closed the scoring on goals by
Gilbane with 5:14 left and Sage with 20 seconds to go. Tusculum
outshot Queens 11-7 in the fourth quarter and the teams were even
9-9 in ground balls over the final 15 minutes.
Stryker led all players in faceoffs by going 14-for-20 for Queens
to go along with eight ground balls. Thomas had six ground balls
and Hock added four for the Royals, who finished the game with a
40-25 margin. For the Pioneers, Jake Smith starred on defense with
four caused turnovers and a team-high six ground balls. Chapman and
Thomas Loudon had three ground balls apiece and Ryan Hill added two
caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls.
John Perrucci played nearly 54 minutes in goal for the Pioneers and
had 15 saves, while Eric Dolan had 11 saves over the first three
quarters and Jake Newkirk made five stops in the fourth quarter for
the Royals.
The Pioneers will close out their regular-season conference
schedule next Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Wingate.
