Kellen Asmundson scored four goals and added two assists as
Tusculum College defeated Post University 11-6 in non-conference
men's lacrosse action Tuesday night at Pioneer Field.
Jack Timerson and Brad Sage each had two goals and an assist for
the Pioneers (4-1), who defeated the Eagles (3-2) in a matchup of
first-year programs. Tusculum used a 6-0 run over a 15-minute span
of the first and second quarters to take the upper hand and earn
the victory.
Asmundson, who leads the Pioneers with 13 goals in five games,
scored all four of his goals in the first three quarters and dished
out both assists in the fourth quarter to help the Pioneers
maintain a five-goal cushion. As a team, Tusculum scored five goals
in the first quarter and two in each of the final three quarters
while limiting Post to no more than two goals in any quarter.
Tim Wright led Post with two goals while Brian Beatson had a goal
and an assist. The Eagles were outshot 51-31 by the Pioneers,
committed 24 turnovers and lost the ground ball battle by a 47-28
margin.
Tusculum took a 1-0 lead less than two minutes into the game on a
man-up goal by David Fernandes, but Post cacme back with goals from
Alex Brownlee and Beatson to go up 2-1 with 6:37 left in the first
quarter. From there, it was all Pioneers as Sage and Timerson
scored 46 seconds apart to put Tusculum on top 3-2, and Asmundson
and Timerson added goals in the final 90 seconds for a 5-2 lead
after one quarter.
The Pioneers extended their lead to 7-2 on goals by Darrin Wilson
and Asmundson in the second quarter, but a late goal from Wright
enabled the Eagles to cut the margin to 7-3 at the half. The
Pioneers outshot the Eagles 31-15 in the first half and had a 22-7
advantage in ground balls.
Post trimmed the Tusculum lead to 7-4 just 10 seconds into the
third quarter on a goal from Jack Kearney, but Asmundson scored
less than 90 seconds later to push the Pioneers back up 8-4. Wright
and Asmundson exchanged goals to end the third quarter, which saw
the Pioneers hold a 9-5 advantage.
Ben Boyd got on the scoreboard with 9:42 left to give the Pioneers
a 10-5 lead, and Sage closed out the scoring with 15 seconds left
after Kyle Shannon had scored with the man up for the Eagles with
1:34 to play.
Tusculum's Alexander Kleinberg was strong at the faceoff dot,
taking all 20 draws and winning 13 while collecting nine ground
balls. Boyd and Mitch Chapman had eight ground balls apiece for the
Pioneers, with Chapman adding three caused turnovers. Coogan Lethco
and Michael Graziano had two caused turnovers, leading to five
ground balls for Graziano.
Kearney led the Eagles with four ground balls, while Chris Cruz had
three and seven players had two apiece. Wright led the Post offense
with nine shots, with five off the stick of Beatson and four from
Brownlee.
Tusculum finished the game 2-for-5 with the man advantage, while
Post was successful on two of its four extra-man opportunities.
Pioneer goalkeeper John Perrucci finished with 14 saves for the
Pioneers, while Anthony DeRosa had 15 saves for the Eagles.
The Pioneers return to South Atlantic Conference action on Saturday
when they travel to Brevard to face yet another first-year program
in the Tornados. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
