3-PEAT: Men's Golf wins third straight King Invitational title with school-record 551

BRISTOL, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University men's golf team claimed its third straight King University Invitational crown as the Pioneers posted a 36-hole school record 551. TU shares the title with the host Tornado as the first round co-leaders carded identical scores of 278 on Tuesday.

Tusculum's 551 breaks the previous 36-hole program record set at last year's King Invitational (552).

TU senior Liam van Deventer led the Pioneers with back-to-back rounds of 68 to card a four-under par total of 136 to finish third and earn a spot on the King All-Tournament Team for a second straight year.

Chowan's Jacob King and KU's Asmund Norum finished in a tie for first place with a five-under par total of 135. King, who posted the low-round of the tournament with Tuesday's 64 (-6), captured medalist honors via a playoff.

Texas-Dallas carded the best round of the tournament with a sizzling 271 to claim third place honors with a two-day total of 560. Belmont Abbey was fourth with 564, while Chowan and Emory & Henry tied for fifth with 567. Young Harris was seventh with 570, followed by North Greenville (571), Limestone (579), Belmont Abbey B (586), UVA Wise (588), King B (590) and Ferrum (604) to round out the 13-team field.

Van Deventer's 136 total is tied for the seventh lowest individual 36-hole score in TU history. It is two-strokes better than his 138 finish at the 2021 King Invitational during his rookie season with the Pioneers.

Tusculum senior Hunter Hartman earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team as he finished with a three-under par total of 67-70=137, which put him in a four-way tie for fifth place. Hartman's 137 is tied for the 13th lowest 36-hole score by a Pioneer golfer.

Tusculum senior Blake Williams tied for 12th place with 67-72=139 (-1) while freshman Harrison Price also finished 12th with 71-68=139 in his collegiate debut. Sophomore Marinus Jeebe rounded out the TU scoring with 73-73=146 to tie for 36th place.

The Pioneers return to action next week as they travel to Greenville, South Carolina for the Lander Bearcat Fall Classic (Sep. 30 – Oct. 1), which will be held at The Preserve at Verdae.
