Pioneers shoot 285 to climb to sixth at SAC Men's Golf Championship

ORANGEBURG, S.C. --- Tusculum senior Dominic Barron Holden carded a one-under par score of 69 and has moved to with two strokes of the lead after the second round of the 2024 South Atlantic Conference Men's Golf Championship.

The Pioneers posted the third-lowest team score of the tournament with Monday's 285 as TU climbed three spots up the leaderboard and are in sixth place with a two-day total of 588.

Holden jumped eight positions to climb into the top-five with a two-over par total of 142. He recorded pars of the first four holes before making a birdie on No. 5. He would close out his opening nine with a bogey on No. 7 and a double bogey on No. 9 as he shot a 36 on his outward nine. But he would go three-under par on the final nine holes including a birdie on No. 11 and holed out for an eagle from 140 yards out on the par-four 14th hole. He would score pars on his final four holes as his 69 was tied for the third-best score of the round.

Coker remains in first place in the team competition as the Cobras shot 284 to give them a two-day total of 572. Lincoln Memorial, the third-ranked team in NCAA Division II, made the biggest move of the tournament as the Railsplitters 280 on Monday to give them 575 and are in second, just three shots behind Coker

There is a three-way tie for third place with 582, held by Anderson, Carson-Newman and Lenoir-Rhyne. Tusculum is sixth with 588, followed by host Newberry (590), Wingate (591), Limestone (593), Catawba (610), UVA Wise (639), Emory & Henry (661) and Mars Hill (678).

The Coker duo of Jonathan Hallinger and Caleb Tidd share the 36-hole lead with even par 140. Kristoffer Larsson (Limestone) and George Durkan (LMU) are tied for third place with 141, while three players, including Holden, are tied for fifth at 142.

TU sophomore Cole Haygood is tied for 11th place with his two-day score of 145 including Monday's even par 70. He was two-under par through 14 holes with birdies on No. 3 and No. 11. But a pair of bogeys on No. 15 and No. 16 slowed down his momentum, but still posted a solid round.

Senior Blake Williams is tied for 31st with 77-73=150 while senior Isak Holter posted a nine-stroke improvement as he sits at 82-73=155 and is tied for 43rd. Freshman Morgan Cain has posted back-to-back rounds of 78 and is 47th with 156.

The final round will be contested on Tuesday on the par-70, 7,032-yard Country Club of Orangeburg layout. Tee times will begin at 8:30 a.m. with teams going off No. 1 and No. 10. The Pioneers will tee off starting at 9:20 a.m. on the first hole and will be paired with Carson-Newman and Lenoir-Rhyne.
