Pioneers finish eighth at Currahee Invitational

TOCCOA, Ga. --- The Tusculum University men's golf team tied for eighth place at the 2023 McCoy-Wright Currahee Invitational. The two-day, 54-hole tournament was hosted by Anderson University and held at the par-72, 7,513-yard Currahee Golf Course.

This week's 16-team tournament field included five teams listed in the Bushnell/Golfweek NCAA Division II Coaches' Poll including top-ranked North Georgia, No. 3 Lincoln Memorial and No. 18 Anderson. Tusculum, Columbus State, Newberry and Barton were also receiving votes in the latest national rankings.

The Pioneers finished with a 54-hole total of 893 as TU completed its second round with 300 and closed out the tournament with a final round 295.

North Georgia won the tournament with a team score of 854, five strokes ahead of runner-up Lincoln Memorial (859). Barton placed third with 869 including a final round best 277 (-11). Wingate finished fourth with 875, followed by USC Beaufort (882), Columbus State (883), Limestone (892), Tusculum (893), Emmanuel (893), Flagler (896), Belmont Abbey (897), Erskine (898), Anderson (898), Newberry (916), King (926) and Young Harris (928).

North Georgia's Noah Zediker captured medalist honors with a nine-under par total of 207, to win by one shot over LMU's Alex James (208, -8).

Tusculum sophomore Cole Haygood was the top finisher for the Pioneers as he carded a five-over par total of 74-74-73=221 to finish 23rd. Haygood completed Tuesday's final round with birdies on two of his last three holes to finish with a 73.

Dominic Barron Holden tied for 26th place with 222 which included an even par 72 for his final round. In Tuesday's last 18 holes, he was three-over par after 12 holes, but finished with three birdies and three pars on his last six holes of the tournament.

Isak Holter carded three consecutive rounds of 74 to finish with 222 and tie for 26th. Senior Liam van Deventer shot 75-81-76=232 and finish 61st while freshman Morgan Cain placed 67th with 75-77-83=235.

Tusculum completes a successful fall campaign which includes wins at the King Invitational and the Bob Dibble Intercollegiate as well as a runner-up finish at the Limestone Invitational.

The Pioneers return to action Feb. 19-20 for the Saint Leo Invitational in Dade City, Florida.
