SCHOOL RECORD! Pioneers repeat as King Invitational Champs

BRISTOL, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University men's golf team established a new 36-hole school record as the Pioneers repeated as champions of the King University Invitational.

Tusculum carded an eight-under par team total of 552 over the two-day event held at the Golf Club of Bristol. The Pioneers shot a six-under par 274 in Tuesday's final round, which is one shot away from establishing a new TU 18-hole mark.

Tusculum, who shared the first-day lead, had to fend off several charges including a serious charge by fellow South Atlantic Conference member Emory & Henry who claimed runner-up honors with 556, four shots behind the Pioneers.

Host King posted the low round of the tournament with a 272 and finished third with 559 led by tournament medalist Aasmund Norum, who finished with a six-under par score of 134 including a five-under par 65 on Tuesday.

Tusculum freshman Morgan Cain finished tied for runner-up honors with E&H's Slade Aliff at 136 (-4). Cain, who shared the first round lead, got off to a rocky start as he went out with a 38, but shot three-under par 32 for his final nine holes of the tournament. Cain's 136 is tied for the seventh lowest 36-hole score in program history.

Liam van Deventer finished in a tie for fourth place with his three-under par 137 (T11th in TU history) including a career-low 66 (-4) on Tuesday.  Isak Holter, playing as an individual competitor, claimed sole possession of sixth with his two-under par 70-68=138. Senior Dominic Barron Holden tied for seventh with his 70-69=139, sophomore Cole Haygood tied for 12th with 72-69=141 and senior Blake Williams rounded out the TU scoring with 71-71=142.

Indiana (Pa.) finished fourth in the team standings with 562, followed by Young Harris (564), Emmanuel (578), North Greenville (578) and King B (580).

TU's 274 final round was one shot away from matching the school record of 273 shot in the opening round of the 2015 Pioneer Classic at Nolichucky View Golf Course. The 552 total broke the 36-hole record set at the 2015 Pioneer Classic.

Tusculum returns to action next week (Oct. 2-3) when they host the 30th annual Bob Dibble Intercollegiate at Link Hills Country Club. For the first time, Tusculum's home tournament will be a 54-hole event with 36 holes being contested on Monday, followed by Tuesday's final round.
