Pioneers have first day lead at Dibble Intercollegiate

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University men's golf team overcame a sluggish start and posted 285 and have the first round lead at the 2023 Bob Dibble Intercollegiate. The two-day, 36-hole tournament is being hosted by the Pioneers and contested at the par-71, 6,701-yard Link Hills Country Club.

The Tusculum starting-five were five-over par after nine holes, but shot four-under par for their in-ward nine to take a one-shot lead over second-place Emmanuel (286) and are seven shots in front of third-place Walters State (292).

Walters State's AJ Rinehart posted a four-under par 67 and has the first-day lead. Rinehart started on fire birding the first three holes and recorded five birdies on his first nine, along with three bogeys and a par. He would drop back to -1, before posting a birdie and an eagle on his 16th and 17th holes.

Tusculum's Liam van Deventer, who won this event two years ago, shot 68 and is tied for second with Emmanuel's Daniel Alonso. Van Deventer had a very steady round and finished the final two holes with a birdie and an eagle to be one stroke off the lead.

Isak Holter of the Tusculum B team is tied for fourth place with Emmanuel's Markel Olasagasti at one-under par 70. Holter hit the clubhouse on fire with three birdies on his final four holes.

The Tusculum duo Nicholas Taggart is tied with two others for sixth place honors with 71. Taggart birdied two of his final four holes while Brown was -3 for his final five.

Tusculum's Liam Hermansson shot 75 and is 21st, while Blake Williams carded 77 and is tied for 31st.

Christian Brothers is in fourth place in the team standings with 293, followed by Emory & Henry (294), Roane State (296), Spartanburg Methodist (303), Tusculum B (304), Mars Hill (316) and UVA Wise (327).

For Tusculum B, Cole Haygood is 21st with 75, while Thomas Kollberg shot 78 and is tied for 37th. Liam Colohan fired an 81 and is 45th, while Lawson Harkey shot 85 and is tied for 50th.

Three Tusculum players competed as individual competitors. David Zuska shot 74 and is tied for 18th place. Jordan Williams carded a 79 (T40th) and Hunter Hartman logged an 80 (T42nd).

The Pioneers are the three-time defending champions of their spring home tournament. TU has won this event 12 times in the 29-year history of the tournament.
