Holden shoots 66 to take first day lead at Nichols Intercollegiate

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum freshman Dominic Barron Holden shot a six-under par 66 on Sunday and shares the first round lead at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being hosted by Tennessee Tech and held at the Sevierville Golf Club – River Course.

The Pioneers are tied for fifth place in the team competition with 285 (-3) and are six strokes behind first day leader Morehead State (279).

Holden bogeyed the first hole, but responded with seven birdies including four on the back nine to log the third-lowest 18-hole score in program history.

Junior Kyle Engelbert posted the lowest round of his collegiate career with a two-under par 70 which has him in a three-way tie for 10th place and four shots behind Holden and Morehead State's Joe Muschong. Engelbert was one-over par for this outward nine, but birdied his last three holes to climb into contention.

Morehead State has the lead with 279 (-9), while Carson-Newman is in second with 281. Host Tennessee Tech is third with 283, followed by Findlay (284) and a three-way tie for fifth place at 285 including Tusculum, Murray State and UT Martin. Northern Iowa is eighth with 287, followed by Evansville (291), Austin Peay (293), Detroit Mercy (296), Eastern Kentucky (298), Northern Kentucky (300), Walters State (307) and Roane State (325).

Rookie Liam van deventer is tied for 44th place with 74, Nicholas Marchese shot 75 and is in 53rd place and Julian Crupi carded a 79 in his TU debut and is 66th.

The second round will be held on Monday on the par-72, 6880-yard layout.
