MORRISTOWN, Tenn. --- Tusculum College senior Taylor Smith finished in sole possession of fifth place following the final round of the 2016 Walters State College Fall Classic, which was held at The Country Club of Morristown. The Pioneers carded a two-day score of 317-322=639 to finish fifth in the team competition.
Smith carded a final round 75 as he posted a 36-hole score of 152 and was the top finisher for the Black and Orange.
Smith finished seven shots behind tournament medalist Adam Lumley of Mars Hill University as he led wire-to-wire with a one-over par score of 73-72=145. Lumley won by two strokes over runner-up Derek Mubarak of host Walters State.
Tusculum's Anthony Bolden, who was playing as an individual competitor, finished sixth with 75-78=153.
TC senior Cameron Dugger posted 74-82=156 to tie for 10th place, while David Whinery tied for 22nd place with 83-82=165. Tusculum seniors Chris Hutson (84-83=167) and Preston Tucker (83-85=168) rounded out the TC scoring and finished 25th and 26th, respectively.
Walters State won the team title and ending Tusculum's two-year reign as Fall Classic champions. The Senators finished with 613, edging out runner-up Mars Hill by one shot (614). Lincoln Memorial University finished third with 629, followed by Carson-Newman University (636) and Tusculum.
This wraps up the fall portion of the 2016-2017 schedule for the Pioneers. They will return to action Feb. 27-28, 2017 when TC opens the spring at the Richard Rendleman Invitational in Salisbury, North Carolina.
