SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum College men's golf team has taken the lead following the second round of the 2014 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championship. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being held at the Sevierville Golf Club - River Course. The final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday.
Tusculum has a team score of 607 including Monday's 301 performance as the Pioneers hold a one-stroke advantage over second place Wingate University and four shots ahead of Carson-Newman University and Lincoln Memorial University, who are tied for third place with 611.
Sophomore Nick Forsberg birdied each of his final two holes to fire a one-over par 73 to give him a two-day total of 147, which is second in the battle for medalist honors.
Wingate University's Ben Gebhardt vaulted up the leader board with his five-under par score of 67 on Monday, giving him a 36-hole score of 144, three strokes ahead of Forsberg.
TC junior Warren Cheney is tied for ninth place with 77-75-152, while junior teammate Coleman Glick has posted back-to-back rounds of 78-78=156. Junior Leif Ratliff made the biggest improvement of the tournament shaving 11 shots off his first round score (86) to post a three-over par 75. His two-day score of 161 is tied for for 40th. Senior Dakota Norton is tied for 51st place with 77-89=166.
Newberry College is fifth with 615, while SAC newcomers Queens University of Charlotte (618) and Coker College (304) are tied for sixth and seventh place, respectively. Brevard College is eighth with 626, followed by Catawba College (632), Anderson University (635), Lenoir-Rhyne University (643) and Mars Hill University (647).
Tusculum is vying for its first South Atlantic Conference championship and sixth league title in program history.
